Baseboards and quarter round, explained
Baseboards and quarter round are small details with a big effect: they cover the gap where the floor meets the wall and frame every room. When trim goes in with a new floor, it makes sense for the flooring crew to handle it, because the floor and the trim are planned, measured and finished together by one team.
Baseboards vs. quarter round
Baseboards are the taller boards along the bottom of every wall. Quarter round, and the similar shoe molding, is the small rounded trim set in front of the baseboard, right at the floor.
- Floating floors such as SPC vinyl plank, luxury vinyl plank and laminate need a small expansion gap around the edge of the room. Baseboards or quarter round cover that gap while letting the floor move as it should.
- Quarter round is a common, clean way to finish a new floor when the existing baseboards stay on the wall.
- New baseboards are worth considering when the old ones are damaged or dated.
Keep, reinstall or replace?
At your estimate we look at the existing baseboards and talk through the options:
- Keep them in place and finish the new floor with quarter round.
- Remove and reinstall existing baseboards around the new floor when they're in good condition.
- Replace them with new baseboards when the old trim is damaged or you want a fresh look.
Whichever option you choose is listed in your written estimate, so there are no surprises on installation day.
Trim for every type of floor
We finish every floor we install with the right trim: SPC vinyl plank, laminate, tile and carpet. With tile, trim is fitted after the tile and grout are finished. With carpet, the carpet is tucked against the baseboard, so quarter round usually isn't needed.
Stairs, landings and doorways get extra attention; see stair flooring for how we finish steps.
What a clean trim job looks like
- Tight, cleanly cut joints at inside and outside corners.
- Trim fastened securely so it sits flat against the wall and the floor.
- Neat returns at door casings, cabinets and floor transitions.
- Clean-up before we leave, and a walkthrough of every room.
Trim work is done by our own crew and covered by our 1-year workmanship warranty, the same as the floor.
Pricing baseboards with your floor
Baseboards and quarter round are usually priced by the linear foot, so the total depends on the length of wall, the trim profile, and whether old trim comes off. Because we measure the floor and the walls in the same visit, your free in-home estimate covers both. For a rough number on the floor itself, try the flooring cost calculator.
