Short answer: For most Las Vegas homes, SPC luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is the safer all-around choice. It handles kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, pets and wet feet from the pool, and every SPC product we sell is waterproof. Laminate still wins in some places: dry bedrooms, living rooms and offices where you want a hard, scratch-resistant surface and a very realistic wood look. Many homeowners use both.

We have installed both floors in homes across the Las Vegas valley since 2012. This guide explains how each floor actually behaves here: in desert heat, with our very hard water, fine dust, and the concrete slabs almost every local home sits on.

What is the difference between LVP and laminate?

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and SPC

LVP is a plank made mostly of vinyl, with a printed design layer and a clear wear layer on top. SPC (stone-plastic or stone-polymer composite) is the rigid-core version: the core is dense and stiff, so it bridges small slab imperfections better and resists dents better than older flexible vinyl. The vinyl plank in our current catalog is SPC. If you are also weighing WPC, read our SPC vs WPC guide.

Laminate

Laminate is a high-density fiberboard core made from wood fibers, topped with a photographic wood image and a hard, clear melamine wear layer. That top layer is why good laminate shrugs off scratches. The weak point is the core: wood fiber absorbs water, and if water sits in a seam long enough, the edges can swell and peak.

How each floor handles Las Vegas conditions

Desert heat and afternoon sun

Summer afternoons here push well past 100°F, and west-facing sliding doors can bake a strip of floor every day. Every floating floor needs the expansion gap its manufacturer specifies at walls, cabinets and doorways. SPC's dense core is much more stable in heat than older flexible vinyl. Laminate is less sensitive to heat than to moisture changes.

If your home sits empty in summer with the AC off (a common situation with rentals and second homes), tell us before you choose a product. Each product lists its own installation and temperature limits, and we match the product to how the home is used.

Hard water and mopping

The Las Vegas Valley Water District rates our water as "very hard": about 17 grains per gallon. Mopping with hard tap water can leave a cloudy mineral film on any hard floor. For both floors, use a barely damp microfiber mop and the cleaner the manufacturer recommends. On SPC you can mop more freely. On laminate, never flood the floor or use a steam mop, because steam and pooled water push moisture into the seams.

Dust and grit

Fine desert dust acts like sandpaper underfoot. Laminate's hard top layer resists that abrasion very well. With LVP, the thickness of the wear layer matters, so we will show you the spec on each sample. On either floor, a doormat at every exterior door and regular dry sweeping or vacuuming make the biggest difference.

Concrete slab foundations

Most Las Vegas homes are built on a concrete slab, and both LVP and laminate float over it. Two things matter:

  • Flatness. Click-lock planks need a flat slab. Dips and humps can stress the joints, so we check the slab and include any needed prep in your written quote.
  • Moisture. Concrete can look dry and still release moisture. Laminate usually requires a vapor barrier or an underlayment with one built in. Some projects call for concrete moisture testing before the floor goes down.

Pets, kids and pool traffic

Dog bowls, litter-box misses, kids dripping in from the pool: this is where SPC earns its place. Because every SPC product we sell is waterproof, a spill that sits for hours will not ruin the planks. Laminate resists claw scratches well, but a pet accident left all day in a seam can swell the edges. For homes with pets or a backyard pool, we usually recommend SPC for the main living areas.

Condos, townhomes and HOA rules

Some Las Vegas condo and townhome associations require a sound-rated underlayment for hard floors on upper levels. Ask your HOA for its written flooring rules before you buy. Some list a minimum sound rating or require approval. Both LVP and laminate can meet these rules with the right underlayment, and we can help you compare the product sheets.

One continuous floor through the whole house is popular in open Las Vegas floor plans. If that is your goal, SPC is the easier choice because it can run through the kitchen and bathrooms without a change in flooring.

What does each cost in Las Vegas?

At Vegas Flooring Outlet, our typical starting installed prices are $4.83 per sq ft for SPC vinyl plank and $5.13 per sq ft for laminate, material and installation included. The product line you pick moves the price more than the category does. Removal of the old floor, slab leveling, stairs and transitions add to the total. For the full breakdown, see our flooring installation cost guide, or put your room sizes into the cost calculator. If you want to spread payments out, see our flooring financing options.

Frequently asked questions

Is LVP or laminate better for Las Vegas homes?

For most homes, SPC luxury vinyl plank is the better all-around choice, because every SPC product we sell is waterproof and it works in every room. Laminate is a great choice for dry rooms such as bedrooms and living areas, where its hard, scratch-resistant surface shines.

Is "waterproof laminate" really waterproof?

Some laminates are sold as water-resistant and carry a warranty for surface spills cleaned up within a set time. The core is still made from wood fiber, so read the warranty's limits before you put it in a kitchen or bathroom. If you need a floor that is waterproof, choose SPC.

Which is more scratch-resistant, LVP or laminate?

Laminate usually is, thanks to its hard melamine top layer. LVP's scratch resistance depends on its wear layer, so compare the specs on the samples. Felt pads under furniture and doormats at every entry protect both.

Can LVP or laminate go over my concrete slab?

Yes. Both float over a flat, clean concrete slab. Laminate usually needs a vapor barrier underneath, and both need the slab to be flat within the manufacturer's tolerance. We check this at your free in-home estimate and include any needed slab prep in the written quote.
